brain-psychology

I have been a college professor for 5 years now focussing on teaching psychology alongside some great colleagues including the expert in this field Wayne Imber. Over the last 2 years there has been a noticeable decline in the amount of high school students looking to study psychology, with varying reasons as to why. After much thought and conversations with my colleagues and students, we have put together just a few reasons why psychology is such a great course to study at college level. If you aren’t sure what you want to study, here is why psychology might be for you.

Fascinating

The topic of psychology is truly fascinating and through studying this course you will learn the true capabilities of our minds and our brains. Even those who think that they have a good understanding of the human psyche are often blown away when they start studying psychology, when they begin to learn the true inner workings of the human mind. The way in which our minds work, the triggers that cause them to change, the nuances and behaviors of the mind are absolutely spellbinding and when you study psychology you will have the opportunity to learn more about why humans are the way that we are.

Learning About Others

When you unlock psychology and learn about why certain behaviors are caused, you will be able to understand people far better than ever before. This can be a great way to be a better friend and family member and it gives you the opportunity  to understand why people are the way that they are. It can be easy to dismiss behavior when we don’t understand, but when we eventually do learn the reasons why, we can suddenly have the ability to tune into other people around us.

Learn About Yourself

It is not just others that you will be learning about when you study psychology, you will also be able to understand yourself better. Studying psychology will help you grow as a person and better understand who you are, and why you are the way that you are. This self-awareness is a valuable commodity and many students leave the course better people than they were when they began, simply through gaining this self-awareness.

Career Prospects

There are some great potential career prospects for those who have studied psychology. Aside from the obvious paths into counseling and therapy, there are also a great many companies who are now looking at hiring those with degrees in psychology. The reason for this is that psychology is not only used to fix issues in the mind or even behavioral issues, but techniques can also be used to make people better and more focussed at what they do. There are jobs within this field across many different sectors and industries and once you have qualified there will be a great many opportunities that open themselves up to you.
